Governor Henry McMaster has proclaimed Thursday, October 22, 2026, as Lights On Afterschool Day in South Carolina, recognizing the critical role afterschool programs play in supporting students, working families and communities across the state. To access the full news release, download here
In his proclamation, Governor McMaster recognizes afterschool programs for supporting academic achievement, providing hands-on learning experiences and helping young people develop essential workforce and life skills.
The announcement highlights America After 3PM data that shows for every child enrolled in an afterschool program, four more are waiting to get into a program.
“The Governors proclamation sends an important message: Afterschool programs are essential to the success of South Carolina’s children, families and future workforce,” said Zelda Waymer, president and CEO of the South Carolina Afterschool Alliance (SCAA). “These programs do more than provide a safe place after school. They create opportunities for students to discover their potential, build meaningful relationships and develop skills that prepare them for the future.”
That impact was on display earlier this month when SCAA hosted its annual STEM Extravaganza at Segra Park in Columbia, bringing together students from 14 South Carolina counties for an afternoon of hands-on learning,
innovation and career exploration.
